How Exercise Taps Into Your Brain's Oldest Survival Wiring

In the 1950s, neuroscientist Karl Pribram identified four primal drives governed by the hypothalamus: fight, flight, feed, fornicate. These "Four Fs" are the ancient survival instincts hardwired into every human brain — and remarkably, they're still running the show today, even when you're just lacing up your trainers for a run. 

Every time you fight for a personal best, take flight on a run, feed your body with movement, or feel the flush of connection after a workout, your hypothalamus is quietly triggering a cascade of chemical messengers. These are your body's hormones — and a special group of them are often nicknamed the feel good hormones, because of the powerful role they play in your mood, motivation, and overall mental health.

Physical exercise is inherently linked to your mental health, which is why working out can have such a significant impact on how you feel. When you exercise, your body produces a range of happy hormones — including serotonin, dopamine, endorphins, and oxytocin — each one echoing one of Pribram's Four Fs in its own way. Neglect your physical health, and your mental health suffers too; look after one, and the other tends to follow.

So next time you're out training, here's what's really happening in the background — and how to make the most of it.

How Do Happy Hormones Work?

1. Serotonin — The "Feed and Regulate" Hormone

Serotonin is the chemical messenger between your gut and your brain, and it's one of the key hormones responsible for making us feel happy and settled.

This is where the "feed" drive comes in: up to 95% of your serotonin is actually produced in your gut, which means the way you nourish your body directly shapes your mood. Poor gut health can lead to a serotonin deficiency, leaving you feeling flatter and less resilient day to day. A shortfall in serotonin is also linked to a higher risk of depression and anxiety.

Beyond mood, serotonin helps regulate bowel movements, stimulates libido, supports healthy sleep patterns, aids physical recovery, and boosts energy levels.

How to boost serotonin naturally: the simplest lever is movement. We release serotonin during physical activity — especially aerobic exercise like swimming, cycling, running, and walking. Exercising regularly is one of the most reliable ways to support calm, emotional stability, and better gut health all at once. 

2. Dopamine — The "Fight" Hormone

If serotonin is tied to feeding, dopamine is closely tied to the fight drive — the push, drive, and motivation to strive for something and win it.

Dopamine plays a major role in memory function, motor control, and producing feelings of pleasure, motivation, and joy. It's the chemical that gives you the "drive" to get through your day, and it's released across many different types of exercise — from your morning run to a quiet meditation session. It's also released when you eat good food, win a game, or have sex, since it's fundamentally linked to reward-motivated behaviour.

A dopamine shortfall can show up as a diminished sex drive, low motivation, poor focus, and disrupted sleep — so keeping your dopamine levels balanced is essential for a stable body and mind.

How to boost dopamine, increase dopamine, and produce dopamine naturally: regular exercise is one of the most consistent methods, but neuroscientist Dr Andrew Huberman has highlighted something equally important — Intermittent Reward Timing. If you celebrate every single win, your dopamine baseline can drift, and each new success starts to feel less satisfying over time. The takeaway: celebrate your wins, but not all of them — and tie your sense of "winning" to the effort and process itself, not just the outcome. This is one of the most effective long-term strategies for how to produce dopamine you can actually sustain.

3. Endorphins — The "Flight" Hormone

Ever heard of a "runner's high"? That's a very real sensation, caused by a rush of endorphins during sustained exercise — the body's own version of the flight response, pushing you through exertion and discomfort.

When the body registers pain, endorphins are released to block the nerve cells that transmit pain signals. They relieve pain, reduce stress, and produce feelings of euphoria. Beyond exercise, endorphins are also released during sex and laughter.

In effect, we can manufacture our own happiness through movement — which is exactly why exercise is so directly linked to reduced stress, anxiety, and depression. And it doesn't need to mean running a marathon or grinding through a punishing gym session; it can be a morning walk, a swim in the surf, a HIIT session, or whatever form of movement feels right for you.

4. Oxytocin — The "Fornicate" (Connection) Hormone

Oxytocin is commonly known as the "love hormone," and it maps most directly onto the fourth of Pribram's Four Fs — connection and bonding.

It produces feelings of love, pleasure, and closeness, and helps you relax by lowering blood pressure and cortisol levels. We typically produce oxytocin when we cuddle, hug someone, or experience orgasm. But perhaps surprisingly, we also produce oxytocin through exercise, making it another powerful tool for relieving stress and anxiety. So if you're craving a daily dose of love and pleasure, the gym might be as good a place to start as any.

Bringing it Back to the Four Fs 

Pribram's framework was built to explain primal survival behaviour, but it's a useful lens for modern life too. Fight shows up as the drive and motivation behind dopamine. Flight shows up as the exertion and pain-relief behind endorphins. Feed shows up as the gut-brain connection behind serotonin. And fornicate — or connection, more broadly — shows up as the bonding and relaxation behind oxytocin.

In a nutshell, that's how happy hormones work: four ancient drives, four modern chemical messengers, all still steering how you feel every single day. 

That's why exercise matters so much for your mental health — it's not just about your body, it's about actively producing the hormones that shape your mood. If you struggle to make time for physical activity, it may help to look into strategies for prioritising it in your routine.
